Duke Foundation grants $15k to Brown County park project

Friends of Brown County State Park will be receiving a $15,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to help restore a historic structure there.

According to Duke Energy, the company’s foundation has awarded an America250 grant to the group to help restore a fire tower, the oldest recorded standing fire tower in the state. It is located on Weed Patch Hill which is the highest point in Brown County.

Among the improvements will be making the top of the fire tower accessible to everyone.

Duke Energy says this is the first grant announced under the America250 program, which is meant to support community projects in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary.

The grant is one of seven shareholder-funded grants across the power company’s Indiana service area.
