United Way launches endowment; Honors community members, Columbus task force

The United Way of Bartholomew County is launching an endowment to better fund its community efforts during lean times.

The organization announced the new fundraising drive at its annual meeting yesterday. Dan Spurgeon, vice chair of the Board of Directors of the United Way, said that the agency is launching its Founder’s Circle endowment.

This year’s goal is to raise $1 million for the endowment. He said that the Founder’s Circle has already raised $800,000. The agency is looking to expand the circle to anyone willing to donate $50 thousand or more by the end of 2026. He also encouraged people planning their estate to make a donation and become a member of the Legacy Circle.

The United Way of Bartholomew County honored several local residents and organizations with awards.

The Heart of Philanthropy Award went to John and Debbie Burnett for their long time support of the United Way.

The volunteer of the year went to Brent Morrison for his work in the My Free Taxes program, where he volunteered more than 300 hours last year. He was also praised for his volunteer work greeting clients, completing intakes and other efforts to help the United Way.

Hutch & Kevina Schumaker were chosen for the United is the Way Award.

The city of Columbus and its homeless task force was recognized with the Advocate of the Year award. Cathy King, Community Impact Director for the United Way, presented the award;

King said that the efforts have led to a reduction of 80 percent in those who are unsheltered and homeless in the community over the past 18 months.
