Evansville man facing drug charges after Columbus traffic stop

A traffic stop last week in Columbus led to the arrest of an Evansville man on drug and weapon charges.

According to the Columbus Police Department, officers stopped a speeding vehicle at about 1:51 p.m. Wednesday afternoon near First Street and Lafayette Avenue. Police dog Oden alerted to the odor of drugs inside the vehicle and a search uncovered about six ounces of methamphetamine, a syringe, other drug paraphernalia and a handgun. Police also found other suspected drugs but they are still undergoing testing.

The driver, 27 year old Rick Hibbs of Evansville, was taken into custody. He is facing preliminary charges of dealing in methamphetamine, possessing methamphetamine, possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon and possession of syringe.

According to police records, Hibbs has previously been convicted of dealing methamphetamine and escape.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the investigation.
