Extreme weather upgrades to warning level for today, Thursday; Cooling tips offered

Today’s extreme heat is taking at turn for the worse. The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has now declared an extreme heat warning for our area through Thursday night.

Forecasters say that today’s afternoon high of 95 is combining with high humidity to make it feel like it is 107 out there.

Emergency officials warn that the possibility of heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events like this.

The Indiana Region of the American Red Cross is offering three tips to help protect yourself and others from the extreme heat.

According to the agency, you should stay hydrated, stay cool and stay connected.

Even if you don’t feel thirsty, you should drink a glass of water every 15 to 20 minutes and avoid sugary, caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.

If you can, spend time in air conditioned spaces, but if your home is too hot you should go to a mall, library or cooling center. Taking cool baths or showers can also help beat the heat.

Make sure to reach out to neighbors, friends and family members to see how they are holding up. Those most at risk in the heat are women who are pregnant, newborns, children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.

Bartholomew County emergency officials are offering tips to keep your pets safe in this extreme heat.

According to Bartholomew County Emergency Management, pets also can suffer heat stroke. Signs can include, excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse. They say that if you see these signs, you should get your pet to a cool place and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Pets need to stay hydrated in this heat. You should make sure to always have fresh, cool water available. If they are going to be outside, they need access to shade and a cool place to rest.

You should also limit exercising your pet during the hottest part of the day. Instead, walk your pets early in the morning or later in the evening. You should be cautious about the temperature of pavement. If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for their paws.
