Governor orders special legislative session for redistricting

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun is officially calling for a special legislative session to start next week, with the goals of redistricting the state congressional districts and to address tax issues.

Braun signed a proclamation yesterday calling for a special legislative session to start next Monday. Redistricting would mean changing the boundaries of the state’s congressional districts to make next year’s elections more favorable for Republicans. In a statement Braun said that he wants to “protect Hoosiers from efforts in other states that seek to diminish their voice in Washington and ensure their representation in Congress is fair.”

Congressional redistricting has traditionally only been done every 10 years after the release of new Census data, but many states are pushing through mid-cycle redistricting this year to ensure legislative majorities are maintained or grow in next year’s elections.

Braun also called on legislators to make Indiana’s tax code comply with changes made at the federal level through the Big Beautiful Bill.
