Greenwood police issue warnings about scammers imitating officers

Greenwood police are warning about scammers, calling residents and threatening that they will go to jail for missing a court date unless they pay a fake fine.

According to the Greenwood Police Department, the scammers are using the names of real officers in the department in their attempts to scare residents into paying them money or personal information. Other area communities have also been reporting similar scam attempts

Police says that they will not call you demanding you make a payment to avoid arrest, nor will they threaten arrest if you don’t make an immediate payment over the phone. Legitimate law enforcement will also not demand payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or payment apps.

They suggest that if you receive a call that you do not provide any personal or financial information over the phone, or make any payments. Instead, you should hang up immediately and contact your local law enforcement directly through a legitimate phone number.
