Heavy rain leads to flooding on area waterways, low-lying spots

Flood warnings are in effect for area rivers and streams after heavy rains dropped more than six inches of rain across parts of southern Indiana over the past two days.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, Monday’s rains dropped four inches of rain in some spots, and yesterday’s storms also left almost two and a half inches in places.

According to the river gauges, minor flooding is ongoing on East Fork White River at Seymour. The river is at 13.5 feet this morning, a foot and a half above the minor flood stage. It is expected to crest at just over 16 feet Thursday evening and should drop back below flood level by Sunday morning. The flood warning is in effect through late Sunday evening.

Driftwood River at Edinburgh is also seeing minor flooding this morning. The river is at 11.7 feet, which is almost nine inches above the minor flood stage. The river is expected to crest at 13.1 feet by this evening. The river should drop back below flood levels by Friday evening. The flood warning is in effect until Saturday morning.

Flood watches remain in effect as heavy runoff is leading to flooding of low-lying and flood prone locations. Those are in place for Bartholomew, Brown, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson and Shelby counties through this afternoon.
