High temps in forecast into weekend; Cooling stations opened

Emergency officials are warning that hot weather is on its way again.

High temperatures in the low to mid 90s are in the forecast through at least Saturday, with heat index values near 100 starting today, according to the National Weather Service. That will be because of increasing humidity, with dew points climbing into the 70s.

Bartholomew County Emergency Management is urging you to take precautions including drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated, reducing your strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, and if you have to work outdoors you should take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas.

They also suggest that you check in on your friends, family and neighbors who might be vulnerable to the heat and heat-related illnesses.

If you have pets outdoors, make sure that they have access to shade and plenty of fresh water. And never leave pets or children in a vehicle with these heat levels.

As temperatures heat up, the city of Columbus and Bartholomew County are offering cooling stations for residents in need.

According to Bartholomew County Emergency Management, if you need to get out of the heat you can stop at either the downtown Columbus or Hope branches of the Bartholomew County Public Library.

The library on Fifth Street in Columbus will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today through Thursday, then from 9 to 6 on Friday. The branch on the Hope Town Square will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, and from 10 to 6 on Thursday and Friday.

You can also cool off at the Community Engagement Center on Second Street in Columbus from 7 a.m. to 4 p. m. through Friday. It will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

After 6 p.m. in the evening, Brighter Days shelter on Mapleton Street will be available.

Officials say that no food, showers, or areas for sleep available at the cooling stations. They ask that you respect the rules of the facility and respect others at the cooling locations while you are there.
