Indiana Guard members deploying to Washington D.C.

About 300 Indiana National Guard soldiers will soon be training at Camp Atterbury, in preparation for a December deployment in Washington D.C.

According to the Guard, the soldiers will be tasked to support the D.C. National Guard to help increase safety in the nation’s capital. The request for support came from the D.C. unit and has been authorized by Indiana Gov. Mike Braun.

Most of the soldiers deploying will be from Bloomington and Gary. The soldiers are expected to deploy in early December and will received further training in D.C. when they arrive in the capital.

Maj. Gen. Larry Muennich, adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard said that the Hoosier troops “regularly prepare, train and work side-by-side with civilian first responders, and our Guardsmen are ready for this mission as well.”

The Indiana soldiers will replace troops from other states who have been mobilized since August of this year. The mission is expected to four months or less.
