The Jennings County High School community is mourning the loss of a student.

According to Dove Sharp and Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon, 17-year-old Landyn Porter, a junior at the high school, died at 9:36 a.m. Sunday morning. He was the son of Ashley Hobbs.

The school announced yesterday that Landyn was a three year member of the school’s football program. The football team posted on social media that Landyn had a contagious positivity and determination, “despite all that he had been dealt with in his health.”

Coach Jason Burton wrote that Landyn “was a pure hearted young man that could commonly be found fist bumping teammates, classmates, coaches and teachers, just to say good morning each day.”

The school will open the Commons from 5 to 7:30 p.m. this evening and will have school counselors and clergy on hand to offer support, guidance, and a compassionate ear to anyone who may need assistance. Those attending should enter through Door 1.

Visitation will be Friday from 10 in the morning until the 2 p.m. services at the funeral home.
