Johnson-Shelby tornado confirmed after Thursday’s storms

The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado hit Johnson and Shelby counties during Thursday night’s wave of severe weather.

According to storm damage surveys, the area was struck by an EF-1 tornado at 11:03 p.m. Thursday night. It had peak winds of 90 mph, was 50 yards wide and was on the ground for 4.3 miles until 11:09 p.m.

The weather service says the touched down west of Campbell Road in Johnson County damaging several farm buildings and completely destroyed one farm building. It then crossed farm fields in eastern Johnson County, damaging two homes along Rocklane Road. It continued into Shelby County, damaging a home on West Shelby County Road 525N before dissipating near London Road.

No one was injured.

It was one of seven tornadoes to hit central Indiana that night, including five EF-1 twisters and two EF-0.
