Memorial services set in August for former Sen. Bob Garton
A date has been set for a memorial service to remember long-time Columbus legislator Bob Garton, who died on Friday at the age of 92.
Garton held the Senate District 41 seat for 36 years from 1970 until his defeat in 2006. Garton became president pro tempore of the Senate in 1980 and served for 26 years, making him the longest-serving person to hold that leadership role in state history.
According to Barkes Weaver and Glick Funeral Home, the memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30th at the funeral home on Washington Street in Columbus. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the services.
Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard in recognition of his service in the U.S. Marines Corp.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to “America’s VetDogs” (VetDogs.org).
