Purdue says Cummins truck successfully powered while driving

Purdue University says its partnership with Cummins has successfully produced the first U.S. section of road that wirelessly recharges electric semis is a success.

The experimental segment of highway is a quarter of mile on U.S. 52 and 231 in West Lafayette constructed by INDOT. The project uses a patent-pending system designed by Purdue engineers. The school announced recently that an electric Cummins powered truck is being charged while moving at highway speeds along the route.

The road contains transmitter coils within the pavement that sends energy to receivers attached underneath the truck.

The Indiana Department of Transportation embedded these Purdue-designed coils before covering them with concrete highway pavement. The coils transmit power to receiver coils attached to the underside of an electric heavy-duty truck. (Purdue University photo/Kelsey Lefever)
