Safe Zone enforcement to begin soon in I-74 construction zone

Indiana officials will be enforcing a safe zone on Interstate 74 in Decatur and Shelby counties to crack down on dangerous drivers in work zones.

According to INDOT, the enforcement effort will begin on Wednesday, April 1st in the construction zone between the 113 and 134 mile markers.

Safe Zones are a worksite speed control pilot program authorized by the Indiana General Assembly. In a Safe Zone, timing devices monitor vehicle speeds as they pass through work zones. Signs are posted to notify drivers entering and exiting active worksites that speeds are being monitored.

If a vehicle is moving more than 11 mph above the posted speed limit, the system captures an image of the vehicle’s rear license plate. The data is validated and violations are certified and then a citation is issued to the owner of the vehicle by mail.

The first violation is a warning, then a $75 fine for second violations, and a $150 fine for third and subsequent violations.
