Columbus holds grand opening for new public works facility

Local officials, city workers and community members gathered today at a new facility for the Columbus Department of Public Works on Arcadia Drive, just off of Indianapolis Road.

The city held a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening for the new facility, which is five times larger than the previous facilities off of Mapleton Street. The new building cost $13.7 million and has 75,000 square feet under roof.

Bryan Burton, the director of the Public Works Department, explains:

Burton said that the new garage alone has more space than the old 15,000 square foot facility. The public works department maintains and repairs city streets, picks up the garbage, recycling and yard waste and maintains most city vehicles. They are also responsible for clearing the snow, picking up leaves, and dealing with flooding.

Burton said that the new facility will allow the department to be more efficient, to better serve the public and to reflect the professionalism and dedication of the workers.
