Electricity conservation urged by area REMCs

High demand for electricity and tight power supplies throughout the Midwest are causing a serious power supply emergency for central/southern Indiana and southeastern Illinois, including REMC/REC customers. The public is urged to cut back on electricity usage immediately until further notice.

The public’s cooperation will help ease the dangerous strain on the region’s power supply. Without swift, voluntary conservation of electricity now, the region could face temporary emergency service interruptions. Here’s what you should do:

  • Turn off all unnecessary lights

  • Postpone using major appliances such as dishwashers and clothes dryers

  • Turn your thermostat to 68 or lower for heating

  • Turn down your electric water heater setting
