Survey teams to catalog damage today from possible tornado

Emergency Management officials in Monroe County sighted a tornado on the ground in Bloomington last night.

During the worst of last night’s weather at just after 7 p.m., the National Weather Service warned of a large tornado on the ground that had been sighted by local authorities. The twister was said to be moving east at 45 mph and warnings of a tornado on the ground were expanded to include western Brown County.

In Bloomington, the suspected tornado damaged homes, a bank, the county airport and a Kia dealership. Roofs were torn off homes on Fieldstone Boulevard, fences and powerlines were down, and over 2,000 customers lost electricity.

The local animal shelter was also damaged but the Humane Society says all of the animals are safe.

The tornado has not been officially confirmed by the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. Survey teams will be in Monroe and Sullivan counties today looking for damage.
